Hope - The Confident Expectation of God’s Goodness


1 Cor. 13:13: And now abide faith, hope and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.


Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.


1 Thess. 5:8: But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.


Psalm 23:6: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.


Psalm 27:13: I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.


Psalm 107:8-9 (AMP): Oh, that men would praise [and confess to] the Lord or His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good.


Psalm 103:1-5: Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.


Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV): For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.


Romans 15:13: Now may the God of hope ill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.


Romans 15:4: For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.


Hebrews 10:23: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.


Acts 26:6-7: And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers. To this promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. For this hope’s sake, King Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews.


Romans 4:17-18: (as it is written), I have made you a father of many nations) in the presence of Him whom he believed – God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, So shall your descendants be.


Romans 5:3-5: And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.


Romans 8:24-25: For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope, for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.


2 Corinthians 10:15 (AMP): We do not boast therefore, beyond our proper limits, over other men’s labours, but we have the hope and confident expectation that as your faith continues to grow, our field among you may be greatly enlarged, still within the limits of our commission.


Galatians 5:5 (AMP): For we [not relying on the Law but] through the [Holy] Spirit’s [help], by faith anticipate and wait for the blessing and good for which our righteousness and right standing with God [our conformity to His will in purpose, thought and action, causes us] to hope.


Ephesians 1:18: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the gory of His inheritance in the saints.


Ephesians 2:12: that at the time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.


Ephesians 4:4 (AMP): [There is] one body and one Spirit – just as there is also one hope [that belongs] to the calling you received.


Colossians 1:3-5 (AMP): We continually give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), as we are praying for you, For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus [the leaning of your entire human personality on Him in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness] and of the love which you [have and show] for all the saints (God’s consecrated ones), Because of the hope (of experiencing what is] laid up (reserved and waiting) for you in heaven. Of this [hope] you heard in the past in the message of the truth of the Gospel.


Colossians 1:26-27: the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.


Colossians 1:23: if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.


1 Thessalonians 1:3: Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father.


1 Thessalonians 4:13: But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.


1 Thessalonians 2:19: For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?


1 Timothy 1:1: Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope.


1 Timothy 4:9-10 (NIV): This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.


1 Timothy 5:5 (NIV): The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help.


1 Timothy 6:17 (NIV): Command those who are rich in this present world not be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything or our enjoyment.


Titus 1:2: in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.


Titus 2:13: looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savour Jesus Christ.


Hebrews 3:6: that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the eil, where the forerunner has entered or us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.


1 Peter 1:3: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.


1 Peter 1:13 (AMP): So brace up your minds; be sober (circumspect, morally alert); set your hope wholly and unchangeably on the grace (divine favour) that is coming to you when Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is revealed.


1 Peter 3:15: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.


1 John 3:2-3: Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as he is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.


1 Corinthians 15:19: If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.


Hebrews 11:1: Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.


2 Corinthians 1:10 (NIV): He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue so to deliver us.

Hope (Greek = elpis) – to anticipate with pleasure


Psalm 16:9: Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope.


Jeremiah 17:13: O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be ashamed. “Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the foundation of living waters.”


Psalm 119:116: Uphold me according to your word, that I may lie; and do not let me be ashamed of my hope.


2 Corinthians 3:12: Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech.


Psalm 42:11: why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.


Proverbs 13:12: Hope deferred makes the hart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.


Psalm 146:5: Happy is he who has the god of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.


Jeremiah 14:8: O the Hope of Israel, his Saviour in time of troubles. Why should you be like a stranger in the lad, and like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?


Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trust in the Lord, and who hope is in the Lord.


Jeremiah 31:17: There is hope in your future, says the Lord, that your children shall come back to their own border.


Lamentations 3:21-26: this I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions ail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.


Psalm 31:24: Be of good courage. And He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord.


Psalm 33:18: Behold, the eye of the lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy.


Psalm 42:5: Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.


Psalm 119:81: My soul faints for Your salvation, but I hope in Your word.


Hope is a confident expectation of the Goodness of God.


God’s Goodness


Genesis 50:20 (AMP): As for you, you thought evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring about that many people should be kept alive, as they are this day.


Numbers 10:29: Now Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”


Psalm 34:8: Oh, taste and see tha the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him.


Isaiah 1:19: If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.


Acts 10:38: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.


1 Kings 8:56; “Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised. There has not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised through His servant Moses.”


John 10:11: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.


Psalm 85:12: Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.


Psalm 84:11: For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.


Joshua 23:14: “Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know is all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed.”


Isaiah 61:1: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hs anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted; To proclaim liberty to the captives; And the opening of the prison to those who are bound.


Philippians 1:6: being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.


Exodus 33: 18-19: And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”


Psalm 65:11 (AMP): You crown the year with Your bounty and goodness, and the tracks of Your [chariot wheels] drip with fatness.”


Psalm 107:20: He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.


Jeremiah 31:14: “and My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the Lord.”


Zechariah 9:17: For how great is its goodness, and how great its beauty! Grain shall make the young men thrive, and new wine the young women.


Romans 2:4: Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?


Mark 10:18: So Jesus said to him, “why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.”

Deuteronomy 28:1-2: ‘Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God.”


Galations 3:13-14: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.


Isaiah 54:17: No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgement you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me, says the Lord.


Psalm 118:17: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.


1 Peter 2:24: who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might lie or righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed.


Deuteronomy 29:29: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”


Deuteronomy 33:25-27: Your sandals shall be iron and bronze; as your days, so shall your strength be. “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to help you, and in His excellency on the clouds. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, and will say, ‘Destroy!’”


2 Corinthians 9:8: And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency is all things, may have an abundance for every good work.


2 Timothy 1:7: For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.


Genesis 1:22: And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”


Genesis 5:2: He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them mankind in the day they were created.


Deuteronomy 30:19: I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.


2 Samuel 7:29: “Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before you forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”


Ezekiel 34:26: I will make them and the places all around My hill a blessing; and I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing.
