TRAINING, EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND
Training, Experience and Background
B.A. in Music and English from Trinity Western University, 1994
B.C. Teaching Certificate from Simon Fraser University, 1995
TESL Certificate from ESL International, 1998
ARCT Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, 1989
I grew up in a traditional Christian home where my parents brought us to church twice every Sunday. I am the oldest of eight siblings, and my parents live down in South Surrey. They attend the Canadian Reformed Church. I am also a member of this denomination (which is very Dutch and culturally tight), but have been recently attending a Presbyterian Church plant in White Rock called Christ the King. Most of my friends are Pentecostal : ) or Charismatic, and I have been exposed to every doctrine and denomination there is (almost). I love the gospel and believe it is for everyone who believes in the name of Jesus. Like Paul, he has saved me, the greatest of sinners, the biggest sin being to refuse his power and love.
I have been teaching private piano lessons for about fifteen years, and began teaching voice about three years ago. In university I began singing seriously, joining the Trinity Western concert and chamber choirs. After graduating with a teaching certificate from SFU, I taught music and a variety of other subjects for three years in three different Christian schools. Blessed with a travel bug (or plagued, depending on how one looks at it!) I studied for my TESL, and worked in Japan for a year teaching English. There I became involved with a church planting effort from Mission to the World, the evangelistic arm of the Presbyterian Church of America. Two years prior to that I had been in China with Open Door smuggling Bibles for three weeks in the summer. This is what started me thinking about training seriously to become a missionary. On New Years Eve 2000, I arrived in Winnipeg to begin an M.A. in Christian Global Studies with a TTESOL focus (teaching teachers of ESL). I finished one semester full-time, went for an archeological dig that summer in Israel, and then moved back to Vancouver to work. Ive been here ever since, and God has provided opportunities for me to continue my studies. I have one more year to finish. Id like to, but I seriously am thinking about the cost, both socially and financially. I am asking God to make it clear to me one way or the other. I do not feel a great need to finish it, but then God may want me to. Over seas missions seems a forgotten dream at times, and I find the mission field at work just as much. God has been providing opportunities to witness to his truth, and for that I am eternally grateful. I am waiting to see what he will do next!
