*From the cover of the CD: “Local Musicians Produce Album of Global Church Music” – “Two Milwaukeeans, “Dr. Abe” Caceres, noted pianist, composer and ethnomusicologist, and Bob Foley, highly respected bass player and vocalist, are among the five musicians from around the country featured in “Living in Kyros: The Global Church Sins Vol 2”. The recording is an outgrowth of the Global Mission Events (GMEs) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which take place across the country each year. The CD’s 19 selections represent 13 different cultures including Ghana, Kenya, Indonesia, Puerto Rico, Cajun, Chinese, Native American (arapaho), Syria and more. Newcomers to the Christian World Music scene will be delighted by the sounds of African hand drums, steel drums, Arabic tabla and Chinese gongs, and will also appreciate soulful renditions of “Amazing Grace” and “I Love to Tell the Story”.

Most of the music was recorded live at a GME in Lincoln, Nebraska. Four songs were recorded in Milwaukee with an ecumenical choir and instrumentasl ensemble representing youth, teens, and adults from of Our Savior’s Lutheran, All People’s, Bethel-Bethany UCC, Summerfield Methodist and Saint Casimir Roman Catholic Church.

“We were blessed during these events”, says Dr. Abe, “and we (Kyros) as a group wanted to be sure that the blessings would be multiplied. So we produced the album and decided that $1 of each sale will go to a charity.” The first beneficiary will be the World Hunger Appeal of the Evangelical Luterhan Church of America (ELCA).

Two new CDs of Celtic Christian music have been released, in the new series "Celtic Songs of Worship."
The recordings are a collaboration between Prairie Bible College (Canada); singer Fiona O'Leary (from County Cork, Ireland), and Onora, a 9-person Celtic band. Each CD has 20 songs in a variety of musical styles and textures. Many of the songs combine traditional Irish or Scottish melodies, often hundreds of yeas old, wth new Christian lyrics and exquisite harmonies. Most are in English, several in Gaelic. In addition, a few well-known hymn texts are sung to traditional Celtic folksong tunes. As well as providing new worship songs for the church, the CDs are also geared for evangelism efforts among people who listen to Celtic music in general, including people throughout Europe and North America. "Our group, Aradhna, which means 'worship' in Hindi, had its beginnings in England in August of 1999. My friend Peter Hicks and I met up in London and began creating sitar/guitar arrangements of the Yeshu bhajans (devotional songs to Jesus) that I had learned while growing up in India and Nepal. This live recording called Satsang (pronounced sutt-sung) literally means "gathering of the truth." The concert in Southampton, England, recorded on September 7th, 2003, was a particularly memorable evening as it was the last night of our tour and our final chance to get a good recording for the live album we hoped for. Towards the end of the last song, a little 3-year old girl wandered curiously over to the wall and unplugged the cable that powered everything. The entire recording was lost. After the initial shock wore off, we realized that God wanted us to continue worshiping with whoever could stay. This is the music that followed. Prem mantra hi hai bas teraa, man pe daalaa sabke deraa. "Love is Your key. It is through Your love that You have captured our hearts." May this Satsang draw us close to Him."

TELEGU LANGUAGE HYMNAL:
There is a Telegu language hymnal available which includes some indigenous hymns. However, the hymnal only has the words so far. According to the Pastor (in India)., all of the melodies for the songs are already well known by the people in the congregations. Thus, there is no need for notes. Also, the cost of the hymnal would be greater if musical notes were added. When Alvar Helmes visitsed the church in India in 1998, drums were used to accompany the singing of the hymns. All of the hymns were memorized until this hymnal was printed. Several churches had keyboards, but the melodies they played on them were very, very simple since the players did not have any musical background. Perhaps there are some of you that might be able to help them get music written for these songs, as well? And perhaps one of your churches would be interested in helping to fund the new hymnals which could also include the musical score?

Hymnals are free of charge but they would ask that postage expenses be covered.

The songs on the CD were recorded on location in Indonesia in 2001. LATINO WORSHIP MUSIC

Here are some great resources for Latino praise music that is NOT simply "Spanish translations of English choruses":

My favorite spot for Latino worship albums! Y'all just GOT to get "Alabanza al Ritmo del Caribe"! This great sampler album features Christian music done in the
indigenous/folk styles of the Caribbean,so you get to hear reggae, salsa,
salsarengue, flamenco tropical, and other idioms. The album is well
orchestrated, and many of the melodies are simple to pick out and sing. If
you enjoy tight brass and Afro-Latin percussion, you will have songs
a-plenty to dance your praise to God! You can read my review of this album

My personal favorite is "Todo te alabe", by the Puerto Rican
minister Luis Prieto--a joyous, cheerful setting of texts from Psalm 148
and 150. This could easily be sung in anyone's church. We will be using
this song this year for our Sukkot festival this Thursday evening (October
31), which, by the way, is also Reformation Day--in 1517, Martin Luther
nailed his famed "95 Theses" to the door of the Wittenberg castle
church on October 31! (So all you Lutheran, Presbyterian, Reformed and
Congregationalist folks will be rejoicing this Thursday...:-) The last song
on this album "Este corito es" is another hot number that would be good for Pentecost Sunday, since it emphasizes the Holy Spirit falling in the "Casa del
Dios". This is a praise chorus sung in Latino churches.

This and many of the other albums by the Rejoice folks include folk
choruses that are sung in Latino Pentecostal churches both in the Caribbean
and in the United States. Bobby Cruz is represented on this album, in the
lovely song "Dios es Bueno" (God is Good)--great lyrics and great
instrumental scoring.

The Rejoice music folks also have these albums with praise music you can
use:

Voz, Palabra Y Jubilo (Voice, Word, and Rejoicing)--by Bobby Cruz. "Fuego" is sung in many Latino churches--good for Pentecost Sunday, too! You'll enjoy the song "Juan en la Cuidad", which is Jesus' parable of the Prodigal Son, and Bobby Cruz' salsa arrangement of "O Sifuni Mungu".

Lo Nuevo Y Lo Mejor--Bobby Cruz and Ritchie Ray's old and newer stuff.
Check out these simple praise choruses: "Para sentirte alegre",
Oh!Oh!Oh!", "Abriendo surcos"--a great song about the
church working together to defeat the enemy--good for conga
dancing--"Vino y Aceite"--you'll recognize many of these
choruses.

Here's some other praise albums on the rejoice label that feature Latino
gospel artists:

Alabale con Merengue--with good old Giovanni Rios--the most famous gospel
merengue artist (Check out his website on http://www.giovannirios.com) and other
Christian merengue artists.
My favorite Giovanni song is "Un aleluya, un gloria a Dios".
He has other merengue albums that feature songs that could be easily sung by a worship group.
