Middle East Economic Survey – web site

A special offer: The first English - Arabic - Hebrew dictionary of economic terms.
Levin, Yariv, "A dictionary of economic terms. English - Arabic - Hebrew; Arabic - Hebrew - English; Hebrew - Arabic -English. Jerusalem 1995. 234 pp. (very compact printing - 32 terms per page on average); 17 x 24 cm.
This dictionary of economic terms is unique in that it is both in Hebrew and in Arabic as well as in English. It contains approximately 2000 terms in each of the three languages, encompassing many spheres of commerce and trade, including terms that belong to the banking and economic systems that are based on Islamic law.
The dictionary will be useful to businessmen, executives, bankers, accountants, students and anyone who is in need of terms belonging to the field of economics, as well as to Arabists and Hebraists. It concentrates more on practical terms from everyday economics than on theoretical terms.
Dozens of dictionaries ands hundreds of books, periodicals, newspapers and documents from all over the world were consulted in the process of gathering material for this dictionary.
The dictionary is divided into three parts:
1. A Hebrew - Arabic - English dictionary arranged according to
the Hebrew alphabet (not according to roots).
2. An Arabic - Hebrew - English dictionary arranged according to the Arabic alphabet (not according to roots).
3. An English - Arabic - Hebrew dictionary arranged according to the English alphabet.
Professor David Ayalon, co-author of the famous Arabic – Hebrew dictionary, known as Ayalon - Shin`ar, wrote:
"We have here an important and original work which will be most useful to speakers of English, Arabic and Hebrew who are interested in economics and trade and other related subjects. This work can serve as a shining example to similar dictionaries in other fields."
Some soft cover copies are still available from the publisher for US $30.00 + $3.00 postage and handling. Orders should be sent to the publisher:

Iranian Halva - Iranian sweet dessert
1 c. butter or shortening
1 c. water
2 c. flour
saffron (optional)
1 ½ c. sugar
Boil sugar in 1 c. of water. Melt butter in a deep skillet (works well in electric frying pan). Add flour gradually, stirring consistently. Stir flour and butter mixture on med. Heat till it is a light caramel color.
Remove from heat. Add, little by little, ½ c. of melted sugar and stir vigorously. Add the rest of the melted sugar and saffron and stir well. (This cooking process takes about 15 min.). When ready, Halva should have somewhat the same texture as peanut butter or fudge. Halva can be used as a dessert or can be eaten on bread like peanut butter.

Living Islam – film series on Islam (secular) –
http://www.ucr.edu/classes/posc152/wwwboard/messages/52.htm
[URL: www.itsibts.com/a117015.htm]
nbsp; LIVING ISLAM. What It Means To Be A Muslim In Today's World. This is a six part series both about Islam as a living idea. The film, Living Islam, the Last Crusade, depicts the role of Islam and
the impact it had on states/cities, such as Bosnia, Nigeria, and Jerusalem. The film focuses on the relationship between Muslims and Christians in these areas. According to Muslims, Christianity represents a western ideology, which they strongly opposed. Tension between the Muslims and the Christians were very apparent to all citizens. At one time the Muslims and the Christians were able to live peacefully amongst each other in Bosnia, however when Bosnia declared independence in the Spring of 1992, a disastrous conflict between the Muslims and the Christians began to rise. Muslims rejected the notion of culture colonialism. Culture Colonialism, is the western way of life. This was an ideology which the Christians represented. The western way of life was strongly criticized by the Muslims. Things, such as a simple rock video that are common to the American eye, were seen by the Muslims as being severely disrespectful and humiliating, according to the commentator of the film. The film touched upon the way that Muslims rejected the "Westerners". One such way, was jihad. The word jihad means to struggle. There are many forms of jihad, whether it be a quiet form of inner struggle of praying and condemning the western way of life at an individual level or whether it be a form of full out war against the enemy. The ideology behind Muslim faith was growing at a strong rate. The commentator of the film pointed out that even when poverty was increasing, so was the commitment to Islam. The notion of the church and state being separate, would be unheard of. The followers of Islam, strongly believed that the church and state should be one. This belief, caused problems in Nigeria. The Nigerian government controlled the state in a manner which the Muslims did not like. The government recognized both Islam and Christianity as a religion, and did not declare one as being higher than the other. The Muslims felt that Islam should be the political system. According to the Muslims, it was time for a new jihad- a cleansing of the cities nearby. Throughout the film, riots between the Muslims and the Christians are
depicted. One such incident occurred, when a Christian church invited a German speaker to come and speak. Muslims launched a hurtful attack onto the Christians. It developed into basically a war, anyone who was wearing shirts and pants was thought to be a Christian and as a result attacked. It was an extremely painful time for the Christians. This is an extreme example of how the Muslims stood up for their belief. In my opinion, the film depicted the Muslims in a violent manner. I do not think that the film intended to do this, however it almost seemed as though the Muslims would attack anyone who was a Christian. I think however the films motive was to express just how present the Islamic belief is held in Politics. Islam is politics and politics is Islam.
